Michael, erzähl uns etwas über dich und deinen Job
Ich habe bei Evonik in Marl eine Ausbildung zum Fachinformatiker gemacht und parallel dazu ein berufsbegleitendes Studium an der FOM als Diplom-Wirtschaftsinformatiker abgeschlossen. Nach meiner Ausbildung 2009 hat Evonik mich übernommen, und ich habe seither immer im Bereich WAN gearbeitet, dem Wide Area Network, das alle Standorte von Evonik verbindet. Seit etwa zehn Jahren kümmere ich mich mit sechs anderen Kollegen um das weltweite WAN Incident Management – dass Störungen im WAN möglichst schnell behoben werden. Außerdem bin ich technisch für das Evonik TV verantwortlich, mit dem an allen Standorten individuelle Nachrichten und Informationen auf Bildschirmen etwa in der Kantine oder Betrieben angezeigt werden können.
Wie genau sieht deine Arbeit als WAN Incident Manager aus?
Wenn eine Störung auftritt, muss es schnell gehen; schließlich geht es darum, die Standorte arbeitsfähig zu halten. Dann werte ich Log Files von Routern und die Daten unserer WAN-Monitoring-Systeme aus und tausche mich eng mit den zuständigen Kollegen vor Ort, unserem Telekommunikations-Provider und unseren WAN- und Cyber-Security-Experten aus. Ist die Ursache gefunden, kümmere ich mich drum, dass der Fehler schnell behoben wird. Ich bin sozusagen das Bindeglied zwischen Standort, IT und Provider.
Bei Evonik sind weltweit mehr als 200 Standorte über WAN verbunden, es gibt aber nur sieben WAN Incident Manager. Wie funktioniert das?
Zum einen haben wir ausgeklügelte Monitoring-Systeme, die Alarm schlagen, wenn ein definierter Schwellwert überschritten wird. In vielen Fällen erkennen wir Störungen so schon ganz früh und können schnell reagieren – im Idealfall, bevor die Anwender die Auswirkungen spüren. Hier profitieren wir davon, dass wir weltweit softwaredefiniertes SD-WAN einsetzen; damit lassen sich Netzwerke gut überwachen. Und natürlich halten wir engen Kontakt zu den Standorten und sind immer auf dem Laufenden, wenn es irgendwo Probleme gibt. Außerdem ist unser Team über drei Kontinente verteilt, sodass wir alle Zeitzonen 24/7 abdecken. Das funktioniert ausgesprochen gut.
Was gefällt dir an deiner Arbeit?
Dass sie so kommunikativ ist. Durch meine Arbeit habe ich Kontakt zu sehr vielen Kollegen im Konzern, und auch in meinem Team fühle ich mich sehr wohl – man kennt sich und vertraut sich. Außerdem bin ich technisch so gut ausgestattet, dass ich jederzeit auch von zu Hause arbeiten und auf die verschiedenen Systeme zugreifen kann. Ich habe drei Kinder und kann so Beruf und Familie gut vereinbaren. Unsere Zwillinge hat es auch schon erwischt: Sie beschäftigen sich bereits gern mit unserer privaten Technik zu Hause und helfen sich gegenseitig bei Problemen.
